2011 Finding Adam: Epstein and Harewood – An Extraordinary Story

Finding Adam was an exhibition throughout Harewood House and the Terrace Gallery, revealing the untold, extraordinary story of Sir Jacob Epstein’s controversial Adam (1938–9), located here in the Entrance Hall since 1976. The sculpture’s travels around the world, from London to Blackpool, to New York, South Africa and Edinburgh, and finally to Harewood, was revealed.

The exhibition celebrated Adam’s recent return to Harewood following conservation, and marked the 50th anniversary of the pioneering 1961 Edinburgh International Festival retrospective, under the Artistic Directorship of the 7th Earl of Harewood.

We also looked at the relationship between Lord Harewood and Epstein, the way in which their lives intertwined and how they came to have a lasting effect on each other.
